The Maldives

As the lowest lying nation on Earth, the Maldives face the risk of being overtaken by water. The turquoise lagoons, looming palm trees and scenic beach huts that are a trademark of the island's booming tourism industry may be completely submerged by the end of the century. In 2008, President Mohamed Nasheed announced plans to purchase land from neighboring countries in hopes of relocating the country's population before it's too late.
