An oil containment boom is deployed at Naval Air Station Pensacola to protect environmentally sensitive grass beds from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. This image sums up the Gulf Coast's all-hands-on-deck approach to fighting the latest environmental disaster — millions of gallons of oil pumping into the ocean from an underwater oil well. We don't know yet how the coast will be transformed by the spill, but the ongoing story brings to mind a few other locations that have been changed by man-made and natural disasters.
