How much water do we need?
While most of the world must walk an average of three hours to obtain clean water, the rest of us may walk 30 seconds to the nearest faucet. In fact, as the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service notes, “the average single-family home uses 80 gallons of water per person each day in the winter and 120 gallons in the summer.” To what end is all this water going? “Showering, bathing and using the toilet account for about two-thirds of the average family's water usage.” Meanwhile, the average person is thought to need approximately two quarts of water a day.
