Really thoughtless word choice here. Passengers?? It's a gross distortion and disservice to refer to humans who were enslaved cargo chattel on those vile ships as "passengers." It's like referring to someone who is raped or murdered as a "participant."

I cant believe that on a website that is meant to humor and inform people will become offended. There was nothing racist in the comment and is not necessary to assume so, He only meant that the branches look like skeletons, those who believe he meant otherwise are severely deluded by their own insecurities and misinformation. He merely stated a fact and added humor, I think we could all learn to lighten up a bit as well. Thank you.

Y'all stupid???
How is it racist? He was talking about history and pointing out a very OBVIOUS fact that because of the roots, some people probably did die. Did he say blacks? No...He said PEOPLE. You are so sensitive about racism you can't enjoy simple things, like trees...You all piss me off so bad!

He wasn't trying to be racist, believe it or not it was a joke. There was no light made about the concept of slavery; there were no racial slurs or implications. Breathe, people, you're being super sensitive.

There is absolutely nothing racist about the description. I'm black and whenever anyone bring up slavery or anything about the institution every single other person cries foul like they were in chains themselves. Relax. He wasn't waying we deserved to be in chains or we're porch monkeys, that's different. Nor did he say that they lost slaves, he just said passengers. Lets remember there were white people on the boats too. You're overanalyzing the article and being too sensitive. Stop living in.... More

They left some of the passengers along the way???? How insensitive is that statement. Especially considering how many people died on and off of slave ships. Are you a racist, elitist, or a moron?

I work with guys that make statements like this. When you call them on it they look at you like you are super sensitive or something. I will bet $100 that this guy is your typical right winger that never had much interaction with Blacks. That was a very ignorant statment. But alas, your fellow right wingers will defend you..

Number 1 is the cover and beginning statement for the article, number 7 is actually explaining the tree.

...there are nine photos. So, while 7 is a close-up of the tree pictured next to the description of the entire article, there are still eight trees. =)

How spoiled was the opportunity to appreciate the uniquness of the trees by the tactless language. The pictures were great but the descriptions were poor in taste.

This tree is very beautiful, but the main article picture is incredible. Great article. Very macabre.

Only one tree that's even creepy at all. There's an underwater river in Mexico that's very creepy and has trees. You can see in the pictures from this article:

Anthropomorphic tree

Anthropomorphism is the recognition of people-like characteristics in animals, plants or non-living things. This tree can be found in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. During the time of slavery in the South, slave ships were often unable to make it through the Outer Banks because of the treacherous landscapes. From the looks of this picture, it seems as if they may have lost some passengers along the way.
