The park, which is best explored by canoe, was established to protect the fragile ecosystem that includes more than 750 species of birds, fish, mammals and reptiles. Today, the mysterious expanse of sawgrass prairie and mangrove swamp is a favorite spot for environmental enthusiasts who want to spot alligators or exotic birds.
