'The Serengeti of the West'

The Carrizo Plain is sometimes called "the Serengeti of the West" because it is a small but surviving patch of land that demonstrates what much of California was once like. An incredible diversity of wildlife exists in what seems, at a glance, like a monochromatic, shrub-covered landscape. Spend a little time at this monument, though, and you will soon discover why it has been protected and how valuable it truly is.
