Entire towns have been swept away, adding to the toll of people dead or missing following the initial quake and subsequent tsunami.

A new magnitude-6.1 earthquake struck the country even as blackouts swept the country. Recovery efforts are underway, but it will be a long time until life in northeastern Japan returns to normal.
