Kill the rest of these mice before they over populate and area and spread the Hanta Virus. We have enough vermon that are out of control. As for the other 12 in this series they are great (even the rat/possum looking thing).

Just wondering if this is a true "mouse"/rodent or is it a marsupial, like so many unusual species from 'down under'. I have to say, after reading many of the comments, I'm amazed at the lack of real interest or curiosity about nature. Mostly it's just,"Aww, cute", or " Kill it"! Come on people, read a book; take a real interest in the world around you!

It is a true mouse. They are one of the few land mammals in Australia that are not marsupials that occurred without human intervention.

If we thought it was extinct, and it wasn't, obviously it managed to survive without our "valiant efforts" to save it. Who are we kidding, we can do nothing to keep animals from going extinct, all we do is postpone the enevitable, waste time effort and resources to a lost cause. If an animal species is to survive, they will do it on their own. Further, when animal species do go extinct, the world goes on, the world didn't end when the dinosaurs and other species went extinct, the world will.... More

Its true, animals evolved to their current lifestyle, if the mouse made it so far its because he learned to adapt to this environment. If it dies its because it is the weakest link.... goodbye!!

Actually, Dinosaurs didn't die from a "meteor shower." Or even the Great Flood of Noah... A shark is, technically, a dinosaur along with other various species.

i'm azooloogy major and love wild animals alot i think it's a little insensiive to say that these animals don't matter! personally i would lie to still see animals around when i'm older. also since we cause a lot of these exinctinction we should try to help save them to fix our mistakes!

It's people like you that have caused the near extinction of these animals to begin with.

How many species of animals and plants have become extinct before humans came along??? We are not the problem, we are however part of the process.

While I will agree that we are not the problem, I will say that we, through out history, have not done a lot to prevent animal extinctions from happening.

Might want to check out "Darwin" and "dinosaurs" just for a start.........

Don't buy into everything the media tells you without checking into other theories.....

New Holland mouse

The New Holland mouse was first discovered in 1843. It vanished from view for over a century before its rediscovery in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park north of Sydney in 1967. The cute creatures are still fighting for their existence despite valiant conservation efforts. One of its remote Victorian populations was wiped out in the Australian wildfires of 1983, although healthier populations still exist in New South Wales and Tasmania.
