Look I'm proud of the idea that we as humans are becoming smart enough to show concern with what we are negatively causing to the only habitable planet in our solar system. Furthermore how we treat each other is equally as important! Though for blog purposes.. if people aren't intelligent enough to say something profitable they shouldn't say anything. Those pictures are a mess but you shouldn’t be here to argue. It's like this ... there are many statements that bring up relevant points..... More

Focusing so much on the discord generated by differing world-views is a waste of time & a distraction! It's essential to quit bickering and agree to disagree on somethings, but agree to figure out how to (1) clean up polluted areas, and (2) look "up-river" for the causes/practices so they can be halted immediately/asap...It appears to me that part of the problem is that the paradigm of most individuals w/ resources to fix these problems (e.g. CEO's of "corporate giants etc.") is far too.... Sad pictures of course I also see a lot of potential material to make Biomass Ethanol (from Garbage) with! Just think not only cleaning up these places but also using what you clean up as a alternative energy source!!

People who present issues such as the massive pollution and environmental devastation as "environmentalists versus humanity" are missing a crucial point. Who lives in these toxic places, breathing the polluted air and drinking from the poisoned rivers? Other human beings do... So even if one only cares about people and thinks that concern for other species and their habitats is misplaced or even misanthropic, this out-of-control development and subsequent wastelands are human problems, too..... To all the Misanthropic Gaia Worshippers:

So is your ultimate solution for every human to commit suicide??? Do reports of people being killed give you a warm and fuzzy feeling??? Is your mantra "Save the animals/planet. Kill the humans"??? You and other enviro-nazis like you would rather see annihilation of the human race than to see one animal or plant even slightly distressed. You preach annihilation until your own life was threatened. Then you'd change your tune. If the world is so over.... More

Clearly you are prone to knee-jerk responses and hyperbole and histrionics appear to be two of your greatest assets.
Your comments, appreciated by some I am certain, are easily negated using the logic of one who possesses the IQ of a bed of kelp.

Can you really be that cynical? Or is it more like some sort of repressed guilt? I mean, did you even look at the pictures? If you took the message to mean that the human race is to be annihilated to fix the problem, that's your own interpretation. Sure, they are filled with doom, but for some this is the exact kind of visualization that we need to spur action.

Jay, You really need to do some of your own research, and not listen to what some professor or other ill-informed person has to say about the Bible. There is no other ancient book with more original documentation (not even close). Your argument about translations and changed text is ignorant. We have the texts in their original languages (Hebrew, Greek and Aramaic) which are easily translated. You may not want to believe that God inspired the text (which is your right) , but please don't make.... More

I started to read through the back and forth comments and got bored. The point is that we should all look at images like those in this story to remind ourselves of 1. how fortunate we are and 2. what we as a total human race are doing to the earth. None of use can fix any of it alone; in fact, we'll struggle to fix much together. But we can quite attacking each other and take stock of our own activities and find a way to take action - - even small action. It's better than sitting on our.... More

Whining may be the first step to the global awareness that is necessary to change our human patterns. The next 20 years on this planet will be nothing like the previous 20. We are being issued a stern wake up call from the planet. If we do not modify our wasteful behaviors the planet will take care of us. So if you prefer ignorance Joey, to what you perceive as whining I guess that may put you with those that think everything is fine and we can keep indulging in the ways that are destroying the.... I think the human race is the most destructive living being ever to roam the earth. Even after the extinction of human beings, the amount of toxic waste we are going to leave behind will be so abundant that no other living beings will exist or survive. It is sad to realize that a planet so beautiful and full of life will be left as one big land fill full of trash, nuclear waste, and air pollution. No wonder mother nature has no mercy on us. I guess she is gonna let us have it just the same.... More

I am really sad to read these stories and see these pictures. I am not sure if population growth really much to do with this, as pollution has been a problem for a long time. I think we need to focus more on creating less waste, and using our limited resources wisely. We live in a disposable world. Our impact on the Earth would be far less if we could use, reuse or recycle everything! Also - use your money wisely - buy quality products that are well made instead of buying multiples of cheaper.... More

If the list were of the 60 most toxic places to live in the U.S., mine would be #57. Our air is the 57th worst in the nation, our groundwater, Aquifer, the Gulf of Mexico, and Fenholloway river are badly contaminated by the P&G/Buckeye pulp mill effluent, containing thousands of toxics, including dioxins, furans, arsenicals.
Dire straits....that's what we are in.

Hey, Recycleman - NO, it's not about uneducated people - in fact, it is about the supposed polar opposite - the corporations, the capitalists, the CEO's, that know EXACTLY what they are doing and don't give a f***. It is ALL about profit for them - environmental and human consideration is NOT part of the equation.

As you see in the pictures, there is another world besides your back yard.
First of all, limiting birth rate is a valid solution to overpopulation and the consequent garbage that would be created.
Secondly, your narrow-minded,uneducated and unrespectful reaction to someone that is maybe twice your age makes me realize that, sadly enough, you will probably raise your kids with the same mindset.

In 2009 Discovery produced an environmental series with Canadian millionaire Kevin O'Leary and I mean it showed possible solutions, but, they probably released more GHG's in filming it using helicopter's. Alot of people love the earth and would volunteer to do what they tried to do.

So I guess the Catholic Church is to blame for the overpopulation? It is they who insist on denying birth control and abortions. They and conservative Christians and idiots who think that by denying abortions they are saving lives, quite the contrary of course. Religion is not holding on to certain principles that don't belong in this age anymore?

Nobody can coherently explain the concept of 'god', why even discuss it. Yet the 'god(s)' or another is enough reason to kill, condemn, lecture, and keep power.(funny how there seem to be mutiple gods, but keep denying that fact, hold on to your little warm blanket)

Apocalypse now?

As the world's population balloons to almost 7 billion, it's become more and more difficult to find anywhere on Earth unaffected by man-made pollution and development, and far too often it takes things going really wrong before people take action to keep our planet clean. So here's a list that might help to motivate: The 15 most polluted places in the world.
