: (.. No maybe we can't go to Russia and clean that up or go to strange far away lands and clean up dacades of abuse. we are responible for evvery single choice and the results of that choice.. say No... to just one thing! Example: cut down on your beef eating = saying yes to saving the earth.. I did not get a burger today I modeled a difficult choice and food is very limmited where I work and live... save the trees save the earth save us.... one choice at a time.... what will you do.... No matter where we go - the deserts, the highest mountains, the arctic and antarctic, rain forests, the ocean deep, sailing the seas, exploring outer space - we can't help but leave a trail of pollution.

Yes, we do need to change our behavior - soon! Or, our behavior will serve as a form of suicidal genocide against our own species. Humans are such a beautiful life form - we should try to love ourselves more and love the home that sustains us.

No matter who polluted those places. I mean, of coarse all the people who took part in those mess should be brought before an intenational trial, business man along with politicians, and judge with even death penalty to prenvent it in the future, because there is no difference in what i can see than in a genocide. And i believe this should be coming up as soon as possible.
But what are we doing to clean those mess right now. We really need to stop complaining and start acting on.... More

Ya know, besides the photos in this article.... another sad thing is that after an entire year there are only 171 comments... and most of them are attacking each other.
I'd like to know, has ANYTHING been done to clean up these 15 worst places?

if I don't have to buy a new cell every 2 years (that seems to be the shelf life on phones or computers etc) If my phone will last for 5 years instead of barely surviving by end of 2nd year ...i would be polluting less.

i live in hongkong, southern china. the pollution problems in my region are numerous....yet miraculously white dolphins have increased in numbers recently...i think pollution can be checked, if not totally eradicated; global population growth is inevitable & maybe humans have to find another planet earth, as suggested by stephen hawkings

Really? You're including a garbage island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and SPACE as toxic places to "Live"?? I didn't know there were people living in space, or the middle of the ocean...

The title didn't say anything about places for *people* to live and last I was aware, there are a couple living organisms still in the ocean - looks like a toxic place for them to *live*.

To anyone with half an eye it's rather easy to see that this picture superimposes several photos. You can see various satellites moving along their trajectories. I mean I'm cool with it; I'm all for your agenda. But come on, your tactics are blatantly perforated.

We are the ones who made the mess - look at the images closely, it's all contemporary detritus made in the last half century or so. The images show clearly that we are our own worst enemy.

All the satellites in that picture of earths orbit are several hundred times real size and nearly all of them are in use for various purposes. Theres been only a few deactivated satellites, one was actually a complete collision between a Russian and an American satellite (wouldn't you know it) and theres been a few others that were decommissioned and blasted out of orbit by anti-satellite missiles. It's really not pollution because compared to how much space there is in high orbit and how.... More

It all comes down to what we as North American's buy. We are the number one consumers in the world. Stop buying all these product we don't need and these companies will not have anyone to sell them too. The pollution is only as bad as WE make it. I hear people say we don't have control, but we have all the control. Let's do something about this!

the biggest reason for this big mess we are all in is the monetary system and its principles of profit (which equate it to survival / better living / satisfaction) .. then there is society and its ideologies of resisting change. I think over population is the result of the economic and social problems.

If the first listed toxic place to live is Earth's orbit something is seriously wrong. As far as I'm concerned the orbit has ALWAYS been a deadly place to attempt to live.

I like where I live..
You litter - you'll be slapped with a fine
You spit - you'll be slapped with a fine
You don't flush the toilet - You'll be slapped with a fine
Over population - you'll be encouraged not to have children - only 2 the most
Under population - you'll be encouraged to have children - but please be educated
At the end of the day, if there's no corruption, there should be no problem. If the money actually goes to where it should.. If strict.... More

Sounds like you live in Oz. But in a manner of speaking I agree with you. If people cannot be adult enough to do the right thing then by all means the law should meke things tougher. However, when it comes to issues such as the law, government, etc; they never seem to try balancing things. They seem to automatically go to extreems I'm afraid. I do believe very strongly that our children should be taught correctly and that owning 3 of everything be outlawed, and even allowing so many children.... More

How can one argue that it is a population problem without taking into account the inequitable consumption and waste creation patterns across the World. It is naïve and reductionist to lay the blame on population. All you have to do is compare carbon footprints of the average middle class person in America and that of a middle class person in rural Zimbabwe, or Nepal or anywhere in the Global South for that matter to realize the huge hole in this argument.

Anonymous, middle class Americans did not create the toxic waste dumps in Russia or pollute the rivers in Indonesia, Argentina, and India. This is a universal problem, not an issue of rich vs. poor. Overpopulation also fuels wars and famines. It is for our own good that we limit our numbers.

population has a very big play on pollution as well as on the environment as a whole. More tuna needed to feed the masses, more trees in the rain forests chopped down to raise cattle so certain burger franchises can keep making billions. So because of the population there is a definate chain reaction in the eco system. And folks....it ain't good. How can anyone honestly think that people would willing live near water or on land which is extremely toxic unless they had NO alternative. Oh man has.... More

I agree with the first sentence. NOT the second. I do not believe in overpopulation. Just people trying to live in an ant hill rather than spread their wings and Live. I am proud to raise a large family 3kids plus-and teach them to respect the planet.

Overpopulation is a big part of this problem. One solution that has been proven effective is to empower women to make childbearing decisions. If birth control is available and her family supports her using it, she will usually choose to have only the children her family can support, resulting in healthier children and overall stable population numbers. There also needs to be some sort of safety net so that she won't keep having children until a son is born to support her and her husband in.... More

Overpopulation - is OK if the population is healthy, educated and wise. It only helps the planet. So it is better to work towards educating our population to be earth-friendly rather than condemning them.

Finally one really logical comment. It goes for population, it goes for pollution. It does not matter where we pollute, and what we pollute with, and how we pollute, and whether or not if we clean it up. What matters is that the Earh will live through our carelessness, stupidity, name it whatever you want, and I don't even care if we all get extinct, we are not really a very special species (no pun intended). But we do have to think about kids, and future generations, if there were any. .... More

You know the story of the frog and the scorpion....the scorpion asks the frog for a ride on his back to cross the stream, the frog argues that the scorpion will sting him and kill him, the scorpion cajoles the frog and promises the frog he would do no such thing, besides he wants nothing more than to cross the stream...the frog relents and agrees to give the scorpion a ride on his back, half way across the scorpion stings the frog, why have you killed us, cries the frog, for surely you will.... But it is also in our nature....as with most other beings, to survive. Couple that with the fact that we are also a species who craves learning even on a simplistic level as an everyday lesson of one sort or another. We learn every single day. My friend, the scorpion and the frog do not. Let's just pray that we learn sooner rather than later.

Everyone is freaking out about global warming. Think back to when the dinosaurs were on this earth, they sure didn't wear snowsuits, the earth was warm then. And as for the reduce reuse recycle, ha! what a joke. The joke with the recycling, many people don't realize that there is not a magical place where everything is recycled, it's buried in the dump. Where I live everything is sent to be burned in a giant incinerator. I can't believe the woman who has given birth to her 19th child,.... More

I have to disagree on your comment. Clearly if you reduce then your using less. If your using less, then there is less waste. If one is not purchasing the product then the suppliers are not creating more product. By buying second hand or purchasing recycled product, one is reducing their carbon footprint. Have you never seen purses made from plastic bags from india, or reused seat-belts. How about shoes made from old tires. The list goes on and on. Just a little information to educate.... More

Obviously the majority of the world does not share your narrow minded thoughts. America and Great Britain have been world powers for years and donated billions to save the ***** of other countries with ideologies like yours-because you can't rise above your own selfishness. Unfortunately our country now suffers from being run by those with your thoughts.

America creates many more problems than it cures. If you just look at the simple way the average American consumes, our blatant lack of care for the environment is written all over it. We can donate and help out other countries as much as possible; however, it still doesn't even remotely compensate for the damage we do everyday. Our country suffers because of ignorant Americans, such as yourself, who have deluded themselves into thinking that just because they buy "green" light bulbs and donate.... More

Pollution is bad, but what is the solution? Is dilution the solution to pollution? Is concentrating it the solution? Meaning if we concentrate it in the hope that it will either disappear on its own or perhaps a future generation will take care of it? The average life-span of a manufactured item is only 6 months, meaning from the time of manufacturer until it is land-filled is only 6 months. It has only taken humans 100 years to pollute the Earth. What will happen in the next 100 years? I.... More

Earth's orbit

Believe it or not, even space contains copious amounts of pollution. An estimated 4 million pounds of space debris — nuts, bolts, metal and carbon, even whole spacecraft — currently orbit the Earth, threatening satellites, communication and even the lives of our astronauts.  This computer-generated Nasa graphic shows objects of space junk in Earth's orbit that are currently being tracked.
