Jōmon SugiJōmon Sugi, located in Yakushima, Japan, is the oldest and largest cryptomeria tree on the island, and is one of many reasons why the island was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The tree dates to at least 2,000 years old, but some experts believe it could be older than 5,000 years old. Under that theory, it's possible that Jōmon Sugi is the oldest tree in the world — even older than Methuselah. Regardless of the numbers, it's a tree that deserves mention here.

Honourable mention for El Tule?
http://sending-postcards.blogspot.com/2009/12/el-tule.html
I just made the hike to this tree a couple of days ago. The forest it's in is absolutely stunning. It takes about 4-5 hours to get to the Jomon Sugi, but... Wow. It was one of the most humbling experiences of my life. It's a shame that the forest surrounding it was logged for such a long period.
Sorry, the below comment was for Prometheus. This site adds comments from the top, not from the bottom.
Sorry. The above comment was for Prometheus, the tree in the US more than 5,000 years old cut down by a grad student studying forestry. It was not meant for Jomon Sugi.
How tragic that one of the world's oldest trees was cut down by a college student studying forestry. For his dissertation?
