There is a way to count the rings of a tree using a boring drill that samples a complete core within the hollow bit when withdrawn. This is in no way injurious to the tree being tested.

The ‘Elia’ the ancient olive tree in the small village of Ano Vouves in Western Crete has a circumference of 12.5 metres, diameter of 3.64 metres and area of 11.45 square metres. A tree of such botanical characteristics has never been reported in the Greek or Universal Bibliography. These proportions as well as a number of other facts (carbon dating estimated it to be between 3.500 - 5,000 years old) indicate that this specific olive tree is probably the oldest in the world. You can tell how old it is exactly, by cutting through, and counting the rings.

Dear kkittehkewl,
Regret to advise that counting rings to establish age of a tree is only made possible by making a cut completely across the main trunk of the tree. So far no method is known to reconnect a severed tree back on to its stump. Can you guess what that would do to the life of the tree?

Olive Tree of Vouves

This ancient olive tree is located on the Greek island of Crete and is one of seven olive trees in the Mediterranean believed to be at least 2,000 to 3,000 years old. Although its exact age cannot be verified, the Olive Tree of Vouves might be the oldest among them, estimated at over 3,000 years old. It still produces olives, and they are highly prized. Olive trees are hardy and drought-, disease- and fire-resistant — part of the reason for their longevity and their widespread use in the region.
