As climate change continues to cause drastic shifts in the Earth's oceanic ecosystems, many coral reefs are on a steady population decline due to their susceptibility to acid bleaching, low juvenile survivorship, habitat degradation and diseases such as the White Plague.

Along with their possible inclusion into the Endangered Species Act, several of the proposed coral species are already listed on the IUCN Red List.
