Thin forestAug. 22, 1981: A U.S. government report predicts that steadily rising global temperatures will melt land-based ice caps and glaciers, raising sea levels.

Aug. 22, 2002: In a move that is roundly criticized by environmental groups, U.S. President George W. Bush unveils the Healthy Forests Initiative. The proposal calls for increased thinning of forests to reduce wildfire risks. Critics say it’s a thinly veiled gift to the timber industry that will do more harm than good to forests.
