Fiery forests

A wildfire blazes through a forest on Aug. 20 in the small town of Torneros de Jamuz near León in northern Spain. Numerous fires have broken out across the country after several weeks of sweltering, dry summer heat.

Feeling the heat

Firefighters work to douse a wildfire on Aug. 20 in Torneros de Jamuz.

A little more than 2,000 miles to the south, the Canary Islands are also feeling the heat after arsonists set fires two weeks ago. On the island of La Gomera, about 12 percent of the land has been charred by the blaze, which is difficult for firefighters to contain because of rugged, steep terrain and the risk of rockfalls.
