In 2008, NASA created a new mandate that all newly constructed NASA buildings will need to attain, at minimum, a LEED Silver rating. The Flight Projects Center at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) was built on a LEED Silver budget but earned LEED Gold certification. The Flight Projects Center is the first LEED Gold title for the space agency.

Several green building measures were implemented to earn this rating including a living roof, reduced light pollution from outdoor lighting, low-flow plumbing, a smart heating and cooling system, and the use of green cleaning products by the janitorial staff.

In this video, Peter Jones, Facilities Manager at JPL and Dan Heinfeld, President of LPA Design Firm, discuss the green building design features as well as the importance of attaining LEED certification for the Flight Projects Center.
