Chevy Volt

The Chevy Volt, produced by the Chevrolet division of General Motors, is a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle expected to make its debut in November 2010.

According to the Associated Press, the Volt initially will be available only in Michigan, California and Washington, D.C. GM has not announced a price tag but it is reported to be about $35,000 — not taking into account a $7,500 tax credit.

With fully-charged batteries, the car will have a range of 40 miles thanks to a 400-pound T-shaped lithium ion battery. After the battery runs out, a small 4-cylinder gas-powered engine will kick in to generate electricity to power the car for another 300 miles. Unlike many other hybrid electric vehicles, the Chevrolet Volt relies exclusively on the electric motor for propulsion.

The battery can be recharged by plugging it into an electrical outlet. GM has said it expects ten years of life out of the batteries.
