Exercise

Exercise is a set of regimented and purposeful actions repeated a set number of times. Its purpose is to increase physical fitness and improve health. The two most common types of exercise are muscle strengthening activities and aerobics (also known as “cardio”).

Muscle strengthening activities include lifting weights, yoga, push ups, and sit ups. To gain the maximum benefit of muscle strengthening exercises, it’s best to two to three sets of a particular exercise in a given exercising period. Aerobic activities include exercises that raise your heart rate such as jogging or running, riding a bike and playing various sports like tennis or basketball. As long as the activities are done with a high degree of intensity, benefits will be seen.

The benefits of exercise include lowering blood pressure, helping to prevent obesity and heart disease. Mental health benefits, such as lessening depression or easing insomnia, are also associated with exercise.

It is important to start an exercise regimen that does not cause your body too much stress. In other words: do not do too much too soon. Consult with your physician to determine an exercise routine that will work best for you.
