Science

Science is the systematic study of the structure and behavior of nature, the universe and everything contained within. It organizes knowledge in the form of testable hypotheses and predictions, which are determined (and sometimes proven) through experimentation and observation. In addition to the academia associated with it, science can refer to the pursuit of this knowledge as well.

Scientific experiments have given rise to the scientific method— a set methodology of study that transcends all disciplines of science. With roots in classical philosophy, science has drastically changed our knowledge and understanding of the universe. Consequently, science has also given rise to countless advancements in technology.

There are several categories of science, each with its own set of scientific branches that in turn include a multitude of different disciplines and sub-branches. For example, biogeography is a discipline within ecology, which in turn is a branch of biology. Measurement and mathematics — a science in itself — play important roles across the sciences.  (Photo: Shutterstock)
