Congress bans BPA in food and drink containers

Lawmakers finally move to ban BPA after Sunoco tells investors it could not be certain of the compound's safety.

Some may say it has been slow to come, but the federal government has FINALLY announced legislation to ban BPA from food and beverage containers.  This news comes after months of protests and boycotts from consumers concerned about the dangers of BPA.

It also comes after California announced its own statewide legislation to ban BPA.

Want to know what finally prompted federal action?  The federal bill was announced a day after Sunoco, the gas and chemical company, sent word to investors that it would no longer sell BPA to companies for use in food and water containers for children younger than 3. Sunoco told investors it could not be certain of the compound's safety.

Let me repeat that last bit:
Sunoco told investors it could not be certain of the compound's safety.

This after months of the federal government swearing up one side and down the other that consumers were overreacting and insisting that BPA is safe.

The new bills, which Rep. Edward Markey (D-Mass.) and Sens. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) and Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) plan to introduce (now that Sunuco says it's OK,) will ban the sale of all food and drink containers — baby bottles included — that contain BPA.

Better late than never.
