If you are thinking about shipping your kid off sending your child to camp this summer, why not look into one that helps protect the environment? If your child is an avid bicyclist, she might enjoy a trip with the Student Hosteling Program. They offer bicycle touring trips throughout the United States and Canada for teens of all ages. Groups are separated by age so that seventh- through ninth- graders travel in one group and 10th- through 12th-graders in another.

The Maine Conservation School offers a number of overnight and day camp opportunities for children ages 8-18 to learn more about the environment. For example, the “Junior Explorer” camp for ages 8-9 provides the standard summer camp fare of picnicking, boating, and swimming, while introducing kids to the concept of environmental conservation. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the “Primitive Challenge” camp for ages 15-18 is a six-day survival course where campers slowly lose a portion of their gear each day until they are left with nothing but a knife and a piece of cord!

Another good choice is Wolf Camp in the Pacific Northwest. They have over 20 different overnight camps and a number of day camp opportunities for children ages 6-17, as well as a family workshop and camp opportunities.
