Homemade peanut butter

Peanut butter recalls got you scared? Play it safe and make your own PB instead.

Bad news for peanut butter lovers.  The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has linked peanut butter to a recent outbreak of Salmonella Typhimurium. Initially, the food recalls were limited to a few batches of snack crackers from companies like Little Debbies and Austins.  But the list of recalled products is growing by the day, and now includes peanut butter crackers and products like Famos Amos cookies, Keebler Soft Batch Peanut Butter Cookies, Wegmans Peanut Butter Cup Ice Cream, CLIF bars, LUNA bars, and even certain brands of pet food that contain peanut butter paste.  Click here for an updated list of peanut butter product recalls.

The FDA has narrowed down the source of contamination to the peanut butter and peanut paste produced by Peanut Corporation of America at its Blakely, GA processing plant.  Still, it will take a while before it is clear exactly which products are contaminated and which are safe to eat.  But never fear, you don't have to give up those healthy and super-easy PBJs just yet.  Its easier than you think to make your own peanut butter.  Here's how its done:

Ingredients
2 cups dry roasted peanuts
1-1/2 tsp organic oil (like peanut, olive, or veggie oil)...this is optional
salt (also optional)

Pour peanuts into your food processor or blender.  Chop continusouly for 2-3 minutes.  If you like your peanut butter really smooth, add a little oil to the mix to get it to the desired consistency.   Add salt for taste.  Store in the refrigerator.

I have stopped buying store peanut butter after reading there is a legally acceptable amount of rodent droppings allowed in the factories. So very glad to know how to make my own!

Do NOT make your own peanut butter. Popular store brands like Jiffy, Peter Pan and Laura Scudder do not have nearly the Aflatoxins...a very toxic fungus that are in peanuts that sit in humid silos. When you make your own, unless you use Valencia Peanuts that are grown in a very arid region, you are actually eating VERY unhealthy peanut butter. Don't take my word for it, research it on your own.

What's the difference in eating peanuts that I've processed in the food processor and just eating them as a snack? Or are you saying that snack peanuts are compromised?

This is really cool. I can't wait to make my own PB. I bet it is going to be a lot cheaper than the storebought stuff. And no preservatives!
