Jamie Oliver shows kids what's in a chicken nugget

... and the results are horrifying.

Mon, Mar 29 2010 at 2:00 PM EST

I'll be the first to admit that I do, in fact, let my kids eat McDonald's every now and again. It is certainly not often, but it does happen, and they (of course) love it — or at least they did ... until I showed them this video. In the clip, Jamie Oliver, host of the new series Food Revolution, shows kids exactly what's in your average chicken nugget. That, in and of itself is gruesome. But the truly appalling bit is when the kids actually want to eat it when he's finished cooking. Take a look:

My kids were horrified. They turned up their noses, and my oldest proclaimed that she will never eat a chicken nugget again. Can I hold her to that? Only time will tell, but I do know this much: our days of hitting the fast-food drive thru, no matter how infrequently, have abruptly come to an end.

Well Mr. Oliver, I don't eat chickn nuggets or beef, but not because I think its in humane, but the soy/veggie alternative has more protein that is good for weight lifting. However, in observing what you just did I find it even more reason not to eat that junk and I do believe your experiment would have worked except your subjects were very biased. Alot of those kids did not raise hands until the one little boy. Th "prove I'm tough kid" . Decided to raise his hand. If you would have said dig.... More

Haven't you guys heard of Pink Slime? It's the beef-industry equivalent to mechanically separated chicken. Which, by the way, is not unusual. Mechanically separated chicken makes nuggets as well as chicken patties, and mechanically separated beef and pork (and chicken) comprise most hot dog wieners! Search Google for Pink Slime and I guarantee you'll be grossed out :)

This scene was infinitely frustrating, not because the children didn't get the point he was trying to make; it was frustrating because traditional peoples all over the world use every part of the animal and bird. Why? Because this is where the most nutrient dense elements are found! Why didn't Jamie tell the children that there IS a good use for the carcass, and that some of the most vital nutrients come from this component? The entire point of why the nuggets were bad was lost because children.... More

The amount of dollars that McDonalds and KFC and the other's spend on making "chicken nuggets" "cool" and "great" have "this" effect". Jamie, it worked for "me".. I am going to try a 30-day trial of being a vegetarian. I will ask my kids to join me. Thank You Jamie and MNN.com

Thanks all for your comments. I know some people have different opinions on the topic. But one thing I want to clarify is that the part of this clip that I found "horrifying" was that the kids were disgusted by what they saw going in to the nugget, yet still willing to eat it because it cam in a familiar shape and form. I'm not debating whether or not what what into the nugget was healthy, or quality food. I don't think it was...but that is not the point. The point is that these kids.... More

I have no doubt that the mechanically separated chicken is safe, assuming the chicken was clean when it went into the machinery. But that doesn't make it appetizing. I make stock out of the chicken carcass, including the feet and head. Now that creeped me out the first time! But it makes wonderful healthy stock. However, turning a pile of bone bits, a load of leftover fat, some fillers and stabilizers and a teeny weeny bit of meat into a nugget AND PRETENDING IT IS CHECKEN BREAST is a.... More

Why not stop worrying so much about what we eat and worry more about excercise. The real reason why obesity is a huge problem in the us is because we live such a "get it n go" lifestyle where we're constantly driving here or there. If you can, run a mile or bike a few miles a few times a week and you will turn out fine.

You are right.
BUT, it's not either/or. It's BOTH/AND.
We need to feed our children good, wholesome, real food and exercise. The "fuel" you use is just as important as moving the body.

More movement in our daily activities is something we need to pay more attention to, BUT...study after study and every nutritionist I've listened to have all concluded that, in terms of weight loss, you lose more weight more quickly by changing your diet than by exercising. Don't believe me? Look in Feb.'s Prevention magazine where they compared the results of 2 different dieters.

Whether you like Jamie Oliver or not, how can you be against a campaign that wishes to help children have healthy food and learn how to cook for themselves? If you eat well, and your children eat well, and you know how to cook for yourselves, then hooray. But there are a LOT of people who don’t cook well for their children (or even cook), and there are a lot of parents who don't realize what kind of crap their kids are eating at school. Why so much anger people??? If you are on board with.... More

Our son who is 5 will try anything. Shame on anyone who feeds their kid stuff they themselves don't eat. Teach your kids to love food not eating.
When was the last time you invited your adult friends over for chicken nuggets, velveta mac n' cheese and Kool aid?
If you feed your kid instant food like that then you should have a dog not a child.

I was a kid who would eat anything, my half brother would eat only corn and cereal. My mom fed us the same. I was just born that way! Don't go patting yourself on the back too much. I also think kids who will eat anything often go on to have weight problems so watch out.

Honestly, whats wrong with Macaroni and Cheese once in a while.. I've had company over who were completely happy with Mac and cheese. Shame on you for passing judgment in a narrow generalized statement like that. I hope your kids get closed head injuries and need their food blended before consumption. Take that and digest it.

News Flash. They were NOT happy with Mac and Cheese, they were being polite. Shame on you for even thinking on serving Mac and Cheese to guests. Friends and family deserve better than opening a box and throwing something into boiling water. If you care even a little bit about your body and of those you care most about you would spend time to shop, wash, cook, and serve delicious and wholesome meals that help NOT hurt your body!

The one thing Jamie Oliver won't tell you is that all this healthy food costs twice as much and takes twice as much time to prepare. Try selling that to people who would rather spend their money on other priorities. This is why america is going to implode upon itself. The disparity between the rich and poor has become large enough to cause substantial health consequences to the bottom 60% which are pretty much the only ones doing any work. Do you think kids sent to private schools have these.... More

Just watched wealthy friends feed their child stuff I wouldn't give my dog. The child is overly plump and is always hungry. They both work in high level jobs, have a nanny, nice cars, home, vacations etc.. It quite frankly disturbs me to watch this form of neglect.

Just because 'good' food is more expensive (which is a myth anyway) does that mean people that are less well off should remain oblivious to the vicious circle that they have become in embroiled in? How muc does it cost to biuy a few potatoes, a carrot, some broccoli and a little some chicken for example? You could buy enough to feed 4 familes with the cost of an average familty meal in McDonalds. Don't be an idiot and actually try something for yourself before you bash it.

Cost is not an issue at all and the idea that it is should not be promoted. This is a modern idea where it is easy to get fast food, but it is not cheaper. Buying fresh (not from $$$$$ gourmet places) is always going to be cheaper in the long run. It only seems more expensive because we need to buy more than for a single portion but it will last for more than one meal. And a huge element is that you can eat heaps more fast food than home cooked meals. You try and eat a backyard burger or.... More

Jamie Oliver rules! I loved his shows on Food Network, where he would cycle to get fresh ingredients and cook healthy and simple.

Watch Food, Inc (Oscar winner best documentary 2010) to see the horrible state of food in the U.S. Also watch storyofstuff.com to see how much we waste and destroy without even thinking about it.

Even if they did this in the US or everywhere, the only reason those "parts" are "gross" is because society has deemed it so. People all over the world eat things that those in the US and other places would label "gross." In fact, people in the US eat things that some would label gross. I remember how my grandmother loved head cheese and I thought "that's gross!"

He literally says "chicken nuggets in this country aren't made this way", and then you say this is how the average chicken nugget is made. Either your kids are idiots who couldn't understand that sentence, or you've deceived them into ignoring it. Just like you're trying to do to the readers of this column. Nice one.

So what? They aren't made like that in the US anymore due to USDA regulations. It still happens in other countries. The point of the experiment shows that kids will still eat anything that tastes "good," even if it's made with all those additives.

There is nothing wrong with eating bones or skin in your meat. Sure, the chicken skins are mostly fatty and do not contribute in any meaningful way to the nutrition content. However, bones are very high in calcium, potassium, phosphorous, iron, and even zinc. The bone marrow is healthy, and very rich in minerals essential for brain growth. It is even easier to digest than plant matter.

In fact, the only issue I see here is a knee-jerk reaction to something perceived as "gross". There are.... More

And all of this under the guise of "chicken" so that uneducated parents think that it's a better choice than hamburger.

Most of us should never ask where our food came from. Unless you are in a eatting at a place you can witness the raw ingrediants being created into your meal, you risk enjoying the mystery!

I AM GUILTY TOO!

This is not a bad show, however, production and editting can do wonders to deliver the message. Worldwide we should all eat better - ignorance is bliss and we all happy!
