Nick Boxer: It was between its time in the sense that I think that prior to — I think that, you know, in the ’70s there, I think there was the start of an environmental movement, and you probably could have done a show like Captain Planet in the ’70s.

But come the ’80s, you know, the whole environmental thing had sort of waned, and coming into the ’90s, I think that it was not — you know, we were swimming upstream in a certain way.

And I think right now that there is sort of more of an awareness. People who were not at all environmental are becoming environmental.
It’s sort of interesting to see sort of more, let’s say, what people would call conservative groups coming out and being pro the environment, when historically these groups weren’t, although I think it kind of makes sense.

I always sort of said, you know, conservative and conservation have the same root. Conservatives ought to be the most environmental, you know, because the idea to me is do as little damage as possible. Be cautious. I always, you know, just personally, as someone who was involved in environmental programming, consider myself an environmentalist, really.

I always sort of had an issue with the term "global warming." I was like, this is really a misnomer. Climate change was and is the correct term. And, you know, people can argue the science all they want, but what you can’t argue is that clearly we have an impact on our environment. I mean, there’s no way you can look at what human beings have done to the planet and not say we have an impact on the environment. We have an obligation to be as gentle as possible. I mean, we are changing it. We don’t know the consequences of that. And if we’re going to be conservative, we want to change it as little as possible, you know, use as few resources as possible. Doesn’t mean don’t use them, it just means be smart.

So, I think that the way the world is moving right now, there would be greater receptivity to a show like Captain Planet.
