Children can waste a lot of unnecessary water in the average day. Keri shares tips on how to teach your kids to conserve. (Mike Lindsay/MNN, Nick Scott/MNN)

Transcript:

Keri: Hey, I’m Keri Greenwald from Responsible Mommy. I’m gonna talk to you about how your family can be a little bit more green, a little less wasteful. Specifically, we’re gonna talk about water. If your household is like the rest of the households in America, we use so much water. And a lot of times, we use it without thinking about it. So I’m gonna give you some tips that if you just put a little forethought throughout your day, your household can make a big difference.

Let’s start in the morning. You obviously want to take a warm or a hot shower and it might take a little while to warm up. So usually that water is just going down your drain. Consider taking a garden bucket or a cleaning bucket and putting it in your shower, letting it fill up with the cold water. When you’re done with your shower, take that water and go use it to water your plants. It matters, and it makes a big difference every day. When your children are getting ready, teach them to turn off the faucet when they’re brushing their teeth. Teach them to use less water when they’re washing their hands. And if they’re used to taking baths, teach them to take a shower. They’ll use a lot less water that way. If your household’s as dirty and busy as mine, you’re gonna do a lot of laundry. Try to fill up your laundry machine and make it full every load, and the same goes with your dishwasher. Try to really fill it up because you’re gonna use the same amount of water no matter what.

Remember, you can make a big difference every day. Just consider some of these tips and be a little mindful and you’ll make a difference. Remember, being green feels great.
