Interviewer: Throughout history, there have been lots of famous Captains: Captain Kirk, Captain Kangaroo, Captain America, Captain Crunch, and Captain Courageous. Can you tell us about your place in history, Captain Planet?
Ira Blumenthal: Well, the good Captain just told me that what he’s most proud about is the fact that he is the first eco superhero. You know, you talk about Captain Crunch, and Captain Kangaroo, and Captain Kirk, okay, and Captain America, and the list goes on -- Captain Midnight -- they all captain different kinds of ships. The ship that this Captain really is the pilot of is about educating children about the environment, so he is the first captain for the environment.

Interviewer: When it comes to fighting crime, Superman, Batman, Spiderman, Wonder Woman, and a host of other superheroes are ready to protect and serve. How can you, Captain Planet, succeed on your own as the only eco superhero?

Ira: Do you see the muscles? Look at the arms here, okay? Come on. Superman doesn’t have these kind of arms, all right? Batman, eh, kind of a wimp. Spiderman, come on, he’s basically an insect. This is Captain Planet. We’re talking about energy. Oh, yeah, strong hands, strong fingers, okay. For planting. And also, too, Captain Planet is attached to various rings of power. You see, it’s not just about Captain Planet going out there and saving the planet; it’s Captain Planet signing up millions of children around the planet to become Planeteers and wearing special rings with special powers to focus on water, the air, earth, and on, and on, and on, and on, and on. So, it’s pretty exciting stuff. Those are his powers. His powers are broad, and very exciting, and very meaningful.
