Fireworks are a blast, but not for your pets. Some pets, even those that have never been prone to fear before, can become frightened and frantic by the noise and commotion of fireworks on Independence Day. In fact, animal shelters around the country typically record numbers of runaway dogs on the days following July 4, many of which become frightened by fireworks and escape their yards in search of safety. Here's how to make sure your pets are happy and safe this holiday.

Find a quiet zone: If you know there will be loud fireworks in your neighborhood, keep your pets indoors and find a quiet, sheltered area for them to rest. According to the Humane Society, some animals can become destructive when frightened, so be sure that you've removed any items that your pet could potentially destroy.

Offer up some company: If you're headed out for the festivities, leave a TV or radio playing at normal volume to keep your pet company while you're gone.

Don't leave Fido in the car: Pet can suffer serious health effects — even death — if left alone in a hot car. Leave your pet at home if possible.

Or on a chain: In their fear, pets who normally wouldn't leave the yard may escape and become lost or become entangled in their chain, risking injury or death.

Talk to your vet: If you know that your pet is distressed by loud noises, talk to your vet about ways to help alleviate fear caused by fireworks.
