Unfortunately, no independent & verifiable evidence ever emerged that the disappeared “loyal tsunami dogs” were rescued or received veterinary care.

Sinbad served on board the US Coast Guard Cutter CAMPBELL for 10 years before "retiring" to Barnegat CoastGuard Station. He earned 5 Battle Stars during the Battle of theAtlantic and earned an international reputation. His biography, wriiten in 1945, was a Best Seller and is still available. I usually love articles on animals but i consider what they did to Laika animal creulty!!! It's no better than retarded owners leaving there dogs in hot cars. It's really digusting that they would put a defenseless animal in that situation. For the sake of science. Imagine what it would have felt like to literally die of heat exhaustion??!

Fully agree. There were some mice, rats, and a monkey popped out to orbit too I think...sent to certain death.

When all is lost, your canine companion will be there beside you, guarding, never questioning. They deserve kindness and respect!

While Balto was the lead dog for the last leg of the diptheria run, Leonhard Seppala's lead dog, Togo, is the true hero. Togo covered the longest and most hazardous leg. He made a round trip of 261 mile, almost double the distance of any other team including Balto's. Togo was 12 years old at the time.

Balto was just in the right place at the right time, Togo was the lead dog that saved the shipment.

Great compilation of the Bravest Dogs in History. Especially love that statue. Dogs must be so much more difficult to do than people. Great job on the post.

Man's best friend

The phrase "man's best friend" has new meaning when you consider these brave canines. We highlight some of the bravest dogs in history, from a black poodle who fought in the Napoleonic Wars to the Belgian Malinois involved in the raid on Osama bin Laden's compound. Pictured is the famous statue in Edinburgh, Scotland, of Greyfriars Bobby, a terrier who guarded the grave of his owner for 14 years. (Text: Noel Kirkpatrick/MNN)
