Baxter had barely spent a day in his new apartment before the cat decided to check out Seattle from his 11th-floor window. Unfortunately, there was no screen and the curious kitty fell more than 100 feet, breaking a collarbone and dislocating his sternum. After four days in the hospital, Baxter made a full recovery from what the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA.org) ranks among the top five most costly — and preventable — conditions treated at its Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital in New York.
Pet tip: Pet-proof rooms by exploring the area from a dog or cat’s eye level. Then make sure cabinets, doors and windows are locked and secure before allowing pets time to check out their new digs.
