Dachshunds were bred as fearless badger hunters, burrowing into holes to catch their prey. But those tenacious tendencies almost led to Peanut’s demise. After tussling with a skunk, the stinky dachshund-terrier mix disappeared under his owners’ deck in Sicklerville, N.J. A 2:30 a.m. search-and-rescue effort included the fire department, shovels and — eventually — a trip to the emergency vet where Peanut was treated for hypothermia and later released. The deck, however, met its untimely demise.
