Newark: Shih Tzu

New Jersey's largest city, Newark, favors the Shih Tzu just after the labrador retriever. Of Chinese descent (the breed's name translates as "lion dog"), Shih Tzus have long, flowing fur and were primarily used as house pets during the Ming dynasty. Not much has changed over the centuries as the Shih Tzu is the 10th most popular breed in the country — though we do tend to keep the fur much shorter these days.
