Rover is over and lassie is passé as British people shun traditional pet names in favor of ones usually given to humans, a survey shows.
Families are more likely to call their cat George than Tiddles, while pooch names like Fido or Lassie have been replaced by Toby, Archie and Holly, according to a study of 36,000 pet names by John Lewis Insurance.
Poppy is the UK's most popular name for both dogs and cats while Alfie, Molly, Charlie, Max, Bella, Millie, Daisy and Rosie appear in the Top 10 for both animals.
The company's research also uncovered a craze for naming cats and dogs after celebrities, with J-Lo, Shakira, Clint Eastwood and Will.I.am among the stars paid tribute to in the list.
"Our analysis has found that when it comes to inspiration, owners will look far and wide to get their perfect pet name — from the shopping basket and the silver screen to literary characters or even their favourite drink," said John Brady, head of commercial at John Lewis Insurance.
"What is clear is that human names dominate and it's becoming increasingly difficult to spot much difference between our list and the most popular baby name choices."
Some pet owners have shown more refined tastes by naming their animals after classical composers such as Elgar, Mendelssohn and Wagner.
But football fans also appear to plentiful, as Rooney, Torres, Beckham, Dalglish, Scholes and Giggs feature on the list.
Reverence for historical figures is shown by the names Alfred the Great, Che Guevara and Gandhi, though one cat's name Chairman Miaow might imply a lack of respect for the former Chinese leader.
