The Allstate AFCA Good Works Team leads football clinic for kids
Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III and Northwestern State (La.) linebacker Yaser Elqutub among college football players who surprise children of the YMCA of Greater New Orleans.
On January 2, 2012, the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team took to the field in a way that celebrated their good work on and off the gridiron this year.
The 22 college athletes on the team shared their skills and knowledge in a special football clinic with 200 children from the Greater New Orleans YMCA one day before Michigan faced off against Virginia Tech in the 2012 Allstate Sugar Bowl.
This year’s Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, which honors college football players who stand out for their volunteerism, included Baylor quarterback and 2011 Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III, Nebraska defensive lineman Jared Crick, Notre Dame quarterback Dayne Crist and Good Works Team captain Yaser Elqutub, a linebacker from Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana.
At the YMCA event, each athlete was introduced one-by-one and took to the field in his team jersey, surprising the children in the stands.
The children from the YMCA were further delighted when The Allstate AFCA Good Works Team led them through a series of drills and competitions on the field of Tad Gormley Stadium.
In addition to providing skills and thrills to these future stars of the sport, Allstate donated $10,000 to the Greater New Orleans YMCA to help advance the organization’s mission. The financial contribution will help ensure that the lessons learned and the benefits gained from sharing the field with some of collegiate football’s greatest stars will continue in the future.
This is the fourth consecutive year that the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team has traveled to the Crescent City before the Allstate Sugar Bowl to volunteer locally.
For 20 years, the community service award has been the top honor for college football players who make a positive contribution in their communities and demonstrate character and leadership on and off the field.
