Really? SIGG bottles contain BPA

Swiss company SIGG admits that its aluminum bottles contain BPA liners.

Sometimes, my efforts to go green and make my children's environment healthier give me a headache.  I mean seriously ... it's exhausting trying to keep up with products that are considered safe one day and harmful the next. Case in point — the latest information from SIGG, Swiss manufacturer of the über-popular aluminum water bottles that many green parents have latched on to in the battle to avoid BPA.

A few days ago, SIGG CEO Steve Wasik issued a statement on the company's website regarding the presence of BPA in SIGG bottle liners. "SIGG bottles manufactured prior to August 2008 have the former water-based epoxy liner which contains trace amounts of BPA," said Waski in the statement.

Apparently, the company quietly switched to new a "BPA-free EcoCare liner" in August 2008, but bottles manufactured before that time (many of which were shipped out as recently as last week,) still contain BPA.

Like many green parents, I am concerned about BPA, and I thought that by switching to aluminum bottles, I would prevent BPA exposure from my kids' beverages. I'm pretty disappointed in SIGG. They were obviously aware of the backlash against BPA and I'm sure they were equally aware of how that backlash was benefiting their company. Had they issued this statement last year, I would have applauded their efforts, but for the past year, they have continued to ship out older model bottles containing the BPA-liners without informing consumers about the concern.

One positive note is that the company is offering free replacement bottles to those who request it. For information on how to exchange your own bottle, send an e-mail to liners@mysigg.com. Personally, I haven't decided yet whether I will exchange my girls' SIGG bottles or switch brands. I'd love to hear some feedback on what others are doing.

Got a SIGG bottle?  Let me know if you plan to send it in, toss it out, switch brands, or stick with what you've got.

Sigg vs. Klean Kanteen

I've been using a Sigg and a Klean Kanteen bottle everyday for over a year now. I fill both of them every morning from my filtered water tap (the water in my area tastes horrible when unfiltered) at home and bring them to work with me. Setting the BPA issue aside for a moment...I have to say that the Klean Kanteen bottle has held up much better than the Sigg. I've dropped both bottles several times while full of water...the Klean Kantine has a few minor scratches, but the Sigg has big dents.... More

website problem

I tried this website http://mysigg.com/bulletin/exchange_program.html and got an error message and was redirected to Sigg's homepage. I guess they're not exchanging anymore...perhaps they bit off more than they could chew...

chill out

This surprised me, so I looked into it… and as far as I can tell this post is alarmist, and the calls to boycott Sigg are unnecessarily extreme. For example:

"Prior to August 2008, SIGG utilized a water-based epoxy liner which contained a trace amount of BPA. The bottles were thoroughly and regularly tested in both the USA and Switzerland and tests revealed no detectable migration of BPA or any other substance from the protective inner liner. These tests have been public information.... More

Sigg Info

Like many of you I am very disappointed in Sigg. I bought them for my kids and gave them to everyone on my Christmas list last year because I thought they were a safe, environmentally friendly choice. Since they knew about the bpa, I feel deliberately misled, i.e. lied to! I will not buy their products again. I have sent for my replacements so that I am not out the money as I was with all the lexan products that I threw in the garbage. Here is the website that explains how to get your.... More

To SIGG or not to SIGG

Greedy corporate %^&*! - I can't believe they capitalized on the fact that people were buying their bottles in an effort to stay away from BPA when in fact their bottles contain BPA! Actually, I can believe it.

I am definitely inclined to stay away from SIGG and I will never buy another SIGG product. However, I have over $100 worth of SIGG bottles so I would like my free replacements rather than flush so much money down the drain. I will never buy anything else from them.... More

Mad and Curious

I emailed Sigg and heard nothing. Has anyone gotten back to anyone? I have three old SIGGs, plus, I got some as presents over the years, telling them how "safe" they were. I'm so mad, and yes, I want them replaced!

Has SIGG apologized yet?

NO they have not! They don't believe they did any wrong doing. They feel it's perfectly fine to mislead customers for their financial benefit. They feel it's okay to continue to sell their BPA containers for a year before releasing the news. They feel they can win back customers by an exchange program where they give BPA free bottles to customers who had thought they were getting such bottles when they first bought them. And to add insult to injury they feel it's fair to have customers pay for.... More

Sad about SIGG

I've been suspicious about the old SIGG liners for almost as long as I've been using them. I think they tried to play off their secretiveness about the liner as "proprietary information." Whenever anyone asks me what kind of water bottle to get, I always reply "Klean Kanteen"... I guess my hunch was right and I should follow my own advice.

Thanks for the post. I'm not going to trade in for a 'new improved' SIGG, I'm going for the stainless steel Klean Kanteen and I'm going to tell.... More

SIGG! UGH! Time to go Camelbak

Sending back the Sigg will be such a waste; the shipping eco issues. My SIGG will make a great planter. I am going Camelbak. I have seen their bottles and reports for quite some time. They were out in front of the BPA thing before most. I didn't get one because I thought I was ahead of the issue with my Sigg. Boy was I wrong.

Completely Bummed!

I am so bummed after reading this article. The worst part though, is SIGG used the BPA Free as a marketing ploy - all the while not being BPA free. Lying about it is what bothers me the most!

From a 4 SIGG house to a 0 SIGG house...

It's unacceptable that SIGG lied/omitted such information! I will be taking my business elsewhere. As a previous comment suggested... how do we know the new liners are safe? Shame on you, SIGG!

Wow

Jump on the bandwagon all of you, really, why can't you just take a cup of water with you or something instead of ***** about how a $20 contains about 23.8 particles per MILLION of BPA. I bet you couldn't even tell me what the hell bpa does or the actual name of the compound. Cry some more, why don't you all ***** about how your food has poisons in them in which the FDA allows to a certain amount.

you people are crazy

Im really sure the trace amount of BPA that is not leaking in the bottle is going to kill you. Wow people are dumb. Believe whatever the media tells you. I love my SIGG and I will buy more

No SIGG here!

When I found out SIGG lined their bottles with some type of epoxy liner, but wouldn't ever list all that comprised the liner, I decided to not support their company. Although not as trendy or expressive, Kleen Kanteens were simply stainless steel...no liner. As always, less is often better.

so disappointed

Ever feel like everything you know or think you know is wrong? This is very discouraging. I've sent an email to SIGG, to find out what the procedure is to get a new bottle. Hopefully they will email a coupon to me so there is no shipping of bottles across the country.

13 SIGGs

Great, and I just purchased 13 bottles, a few for me and the rest for the family.

How awful, guess I will need to fully inspect each one to figure out which have the old liners.

How can we be fully certain the "new" liners don't also contain BPA ?

Gives the Swiss a bad name

Claire - this whole scandal has given the Swiss a bad name and based on what I know now there is safer product coming out of China than there is out of Switzerland. At least with the products made in China you know what your getting - a safer product at a better price. I'm moving on to a new brand.

Good point!

That is such a good point Claire, and it's why I'm not ready to just jump onto another brand. What's to say that Klean Kantene's or BPA-free plastic bottles won't be found to contain something harmful tomorrow? This is why I have a headache!

Swiss Quality

At least SIGG has come clean. SIGG is a Swiss brand known for quality. How many more products and containers are out there that contain BPA without us knowing? Made in China?
I love my SIGG bottles and will continue using them.

Thanks for the input!

Thanks for all of the input everyone. I'm glad to hear that I wasn't the only one taken totally by surprise on this one. As of right now, I don't think I'm going to go through with the exchange...simply because I don't want to waste a lot of energy (the planet's and mine) on shipping bottles back and forth across the country when I still don't know if I can trust SIGG. Such a bummer.

Klean Kanteen

Go with the original 'green' water bottle, Klean Kanteen. It is made of heavy duty inert stainless steel that is made to last a lifetime!

SIGG is the original

Klean was founded in 2004 SIGG has been around for over a hundred year. So I don't think they were the original green water bottle.

How dare they. (And a nice alternative)

How dare they. SIGG has been reaping millions the last few years claiming the high ground that their bottles didn't have BPA. Now they graciously "come clean" and say 'Oh no, this time we've *really* got a *safe* coating." What utter ********. I plan to recycle my toxic Sigg and spread the word.
One nice alternative I've found is a stainless steel bottle by Nalgene (also sold by Guyot) coupled with this cool accessory called the capCAP by humangear. It's a 2-in-1 cap so you get easy.... More

Agree with G.K.

While I want my SIGG to be replaced (since I did pay for it, under false pretenses), I will also no longer buy SIGG products solely because of their lack of product business integrity. Unacceptable.

Went with Stainless Steel Instead

When I was looking at metal water bottles 2 years ago, I learned that aluminum needed some kind of liner but stainless steel didn't. I got a stainless steel Earthlust water bottle to avoid the liner issue and couldn't be happier. Especially now. I'm sticking with stainless steel or BPA free plastic.

What?!

That stinks!!!! I love(d) my SIGG bottle and bought it especially to avoid BPA. gosh. I don't know what I'll do now. I like the size of the mouth opening (Kleen Kanteens are too wide in my opinion) so I might switch my SIGG bottle for another version.

1 yr old Sigg

Further inspection of the 2 bottles I bought for my husband and myself revealed that we got the BPA-coated bottles. We bought them to avoid BPA and even looked on SIGGS website before purchasing.

I've contacted the company to get more info on how to replace my bottle, though my style is no longer available (bummer, considering there are no other blue bottles). I've also purchased Klean Kanteens and love them to bits. I plan on giving them my future business. SIGG should issue an.... More

3 SIGGS

I am planning on getting an exchange for the three bottles I have (which replaced Nalgene bottles). After they are exchanged, I will cease to buy or support SIGG not because they had BPA, but because they knew and lied about it. I guess I will be looking at Klean Kanteens s well.

I have a 5 year-old SIGG bottle but recently purchased Klean Kanteens for the kids and myself. I haven't decided if I'm going to go through the steps needed to have a replacement sent. I was bummed when I read this.
