Friday food news: Thanksgiving edition

Food news from around the web for your weekend reading

It’s Friday afternoon, and that means it’s time for me to give you a little weekend reading from around the web. Here are a few food related items that I thought might interest you. This week, it’s a special Thanksgiving roundup.

In his Minimalist column, Mark Bittman has 101 dishes that you can serve on Thanksgiving day that can be cooked beforehand.
FOR cooks, most Thanksgiving problems are brought about by the sheer number of dishes competing for the stove: It’s not easy to roast a turkey and sweet potatoes for 20 at the same time. The best solution is to make food in advance, like one of the dishes that follow.

I find pairing wine for my Thanksgiving dinner to be difficult. It’s not the turkey. It’s the sweet potato casserole that throws it all out of whack. Still, wines must be picked. If you’re at a loss for what to serve this year, newsday.com has several picks that won’t break the bank.
For $20 or less, you'll find a lot of winning wines in advance of the holidays. Here are some perfect pairings for your Thanksgiving feast.

Most of us will have a combination of wine and beer at our Thanksgiving feasts. Serious Eats has some serious beer pairings for your turkey.
If you want to eat like the Pilgrims this Thanksgiving, you should probably get busy hunting for deer and wild ducks. But if you want to drink Pilgrim-style, you just need to get yourself some beer!

Do I have any readers from Kansas? There’s a great piece by Alison Kerr on Loving Nature’s Garden on what’s available locally for your Thanksgiving feast.
Kansas really has the best food. Now maybe you’ll not agree, but, before you shout me down, take a look at the feast of local food available for a Kansas Thanksgiving. When you get to the end, then you can tell me if I don’t have your mouth watering. Oh, and a few of these come from over the border in Missouri, but I won’t tell if you don’t, because in the Kansas City metro we’re good neighbors. Local food is the foundation of green communities and sustainability – get eating. Enjoy!
