Weekend reads

Food news and items of interest from around the Web for your weekend reading.

It’s Friday afternoon, and that means it’s time for me to give you a little weekend reading from around the web. Here are a few food related items that I thought might interest you.

Remember last year’s peanut butter recall? 700 people became ill and nine died from tainted peanut butter products. You would think there would be some answers by now and some charges brought against Peanut Corp. of America, wouldn’t you? According to The Atlanta Journal Constitution we don’t have either of those yet.
Georgia’s Legislature passed a law mandating new food testing regulations, but the bulk of them are still in the pipeline.

In Washington, food safety legislation is stuck in Congress, pushed to the Senate back burner by health care.

Meanwhile, criminal investigations into bankrupt Peanut Corp. of America, owner of the plant, and its top executives have produced no charges.

Want to naturally get the coffee stains out of the inside of a white coffee cup? The Greenest Dollar blog says baking soda will do the trick. There’s lots more tips on the blog for this inexpensive, natural product we all have in our kitchens.
Cleaning white sinks and, as I know now, white mugs. Just sprinkle and scrub.

San Francisco Beer Week opens today, February 5 and runs through February 14. The San Francisco Brewers Guild, a group that promotes the heritage and craft of San Francisco's artisan breweries, is sponsoring the event. There is even a festival iPhone app so information on all of the events is right at your fingertips.

We’ve got an educational, easy to understand piece here on MNN that explains what you need to know about the differences between organic and biodynamic wines.
Selecting the right year, grape varietal and wine region used to be options enough for picking the perfect wine. But as more eco-friendly wines are finding reknown among wine enthusiasts and more green claims are gracing bottle labels, wine drinkers who prefer a greener varietal can now add eco-certifications to their list of preferred characteristics. Like the difference between an Australian Shiraz and a Californian Syrah, eco-certifications for wine have subtle, yet meaningful differences. Before picking out the perfect pairing for your next candle-lit meal, read on to find out which label, USDA certified-organic or Demeter USA certified-biodynamic, indicates the better bottle.

Enjoy your weekend!
