If you’re looking for something new to drink this Friday night, I’ve got a suggestion. How about a cocktail made with mint-infused rum? DonQ sent me a sample of their mojito rum, infused with mint and ready for Friday night happy hour.

This rum is ideal for mojitos, of course, but can also be used in a variety of refreshing summer cocktails. I made myself a DonQ mint-less mojito last night to enjoy after a long day of writing.

  • 1 1/2 oz DonQ Mojito Rum
  • 1 1/2 oz DonQ Cristal Rum (or other light rum)
  • 1/2 oz. freshly squeezed lime juice
  • 1/2 oz. simple syrup
  • Splash sparkling wine or club soda
  1. To an ice-filled cocktail shaker, add rums, lime juice and simple syrup. Shake and pour into a chilled cocktail glass. Top with sparkling wine or club soda.
The recipe on DonQ’s website called for 2 ounces of the mint rum and 1 ounce of the plain light rum, but I thought the mint was too overwhelming when I made it like that. I adjusted the proportions of the rums with my second try, and I liked that better. If you really like mint drinks, you can use more mint rum and less light rum if you’d care to.

There are other recipes for drinks using DonQ’s Mojito Rum on their website. I can also imagine that this mint flavored rum would be a good way to make a quick cocktail out of a glass of freshly-brewed iced tea with a little simple syrup added for sweetness.

Of course, I wouldn’t be telling you about this rum unless DonQ wasn’t making strides to be a sustainable operation. The company has “invested significant time, knowledge, and resources” to make its distillery “one of the cleanest and greenest in the spirits industry.”

You can read about DonQ’s sustainability efforts on their website, but here are a few of the highlights.

  1. DonQ’s revolutionary wastewater treatment separates organic solids from wastewater and mixes them with wood chips to create industrial compost for local landscapers and gardeners.
  2. DonQ uses biogas in its distillation process to offset 50-70 percent of its annual oil usage, thus eliminating two million gallons of crude oil consumption per year.
  3. DonQ’s waste reclamation program applies aerobic digesters and microfiltration techniques to generate irrigation grade water.
DonQ makes other flavor infused rums including Coco (coconut infused) and Limon (lime infused) as well as traditional rums. You can use the product finder on DonQ’s website to find a store near you that sells their products.
