Holiday gifts: Wine samplers

For the wine lover on your list, consider a wine sampler that lets them try before they buy.

Would you pay $75 for a bottle of a wine you’ve never tasted before? I wouldn’t. But I might pay that much on a special occasion, if I knew the wine was one I liked. That’s why I think the wine samplers from Tasting Room are such a great idea. I also think they would make a great gift for the wine drinkers on your holiday list. The gift allows wine lovers to try wines in their own homes before they buy them.

Each sampler contains six (50 ml) glass bottles of wine with a screw top. Most of the samplers cost less than $30, and many of them include wine samples from wineries with sustainable practices.

Take the A Taste Adventure … Chardonnay sampler for example. It contains six samples from six vineyards. Samples are from wineries like Grgich Hills, Goosecross Cellars and other wineries that practice sustainable farming. If you bought a full bottle of each of the wines in this sampler, you would pay $178.99. The sampler is only $27.99.

Each sampler comes with a tasting menu that helps drinkers determine what flavors and aromas they are experiencing. It also contains a suggested tasting order and winemaker notes.

You have to search around on the site to discover which wineries have sustainable practices and sometimes visit the wineries individual websites to find out. But, with a little detective work, you can find samples with several sustainable wines.

The Tasting Room also has gift selections. One that stands out to me is the Ultimate Wine and Cheese Experience. Along with a sampler of six hand-picked wines comes a gift certificate for The Classic Cowgirl Collection of cheeses from sustainable Cowgirl Creamery. The wines are specifically chosen to pair with the cheeses in this collection.
