Wam! Bam! Cuppow! Lid transforms glass jars into travel mugs
Have a couple of surplus Mason jars on your hands but officially feeling canned out? Try transforming 'em into reusable travel mugs and 'drink like a boss' with the recyclable, BPA-free Cuppow lid.

Now that you’ve successfully converted those old jars of Grey Poupon into sugar shakers and creamers and those Campbell’s soup cans into soap pumps and toothbrush holders, you may have your sights set on repurposing that stockpile of glass canning jars.

To-go iced coffee anyone? Or how about a spill-proof adult beverage?

Say hello to Cuppow, a custom-molded, BPA-free recyclable plastic lid that instantly transforms your standard Mason or Bell jar into a nifty little reusable drinking vessel. Although it’s being marketed as a DIY travel mug solution, I’m thinking the Cuppow would come in most handy during rowdy, cocktail-fueled house parties when keeping things orderly and spill-free is a top priority. Can you imagine a room full of people drinking vodka cranberries out of Mason jar sippy cups? I can and it’s pretty amusing.

Cuppow’s designers, Joshua Resnikoff and Aaron Panonem, do some explaining:

The canning jar already makes an awesome platform for a travel mug: it’s easy to clean, made of heat-resistant glass, cheap, durable, and when sealed it doesn’t leak. The only problem is that with their large openings, canning jars are not great for spill-free sipping while on the move. So we adapted it - made a new lid that lets us drink like a boss from virtually any wide-mouth canning jar. It’s a simple eco-friendly alternative to poor-performing and messy disposable hot cups, and over-built and expensive travel mugs.

I’m digging this although as a few commenters over at Core77 have pointed out, drinking coffee of the non-iced variety and other hot beverages out of a glass jar isn’t exactly practical (or safe) without an insulator of some sort. I guess it’s time to hit up some thrift stores in search of hilarious beer cozies. Or as Lloyd Alter at TreeHugger has suggested: "... I suppose that if you are the type of person who drinks out of jam jars, you could use an old sock."

What do you think of Cuppow? Ingenious or unnecessary? If you’re leaning towards the former, click here to purchase your very own Cuppow for $7.99.

I'm really tired of companies making claims that something is recyclable- this lid would not be recyclable in most recycling programs in the country. The company would do well to check FTC guidelines before making such claims.

Unless I overlooked it, I couldn't find where this is manufactured, so I'm guessing China? No, thanks. It's not a good idea to drink from a glass container in a moving vehicle, anyway. I had a friend who suffered serious injuries to his hand in a freak accident involving drinking from a glass while driving. I have never allowed open glass containers in my car since. Besides, only two beverages should ever be served a Mason jar: sweet tea and moonshine. You can use a straw for the tea and if you need

If it was a freak accident, as you claim, how much real chance is there that it will happen again? Glass can break, it's true, but plastic does a great deal of damage to the environment when it's discarded. Plastic also harms marine animals: sea turtles choke on deflated balloons which they mistake for jellyfish and six-pack rings strangle sea lions and seals...but who cares about them. Some of us probably do on some level but not if we have to give up our convenience and our plastic. Right?

Wherever you live there's a mountain of trash somewhere close where your personal trash winds up. It will stay there forever. Find out where it is and go look at it. Reduce, reuse and recycle. The more you do this the better off we'll all be. One day you may have children. All our children will inherit this planet from us. So far we haven't done a very good job taking care of things.

Ridiculous!! $8 for this?? C'mon, folks!! Just to be yuppie. . . .
Instead, put a quarter inch drill bit into an electric drill, drill holes through the middle, or if you prefer, sides, of a couple of flat tops for regular Mason or Bell jar lids, and bingo! You have TWO lids, with holes for straws, for what? nothin'! AND to make those cups safer, even for the cold drinks, slip on 3-4 wide rubberbands. Gives a better grip-- even more for your $$ than "adult sippy cup".

Looks great, I saw this on Pinterest and immediately ordered 2, unfortunately they have my paypal payment - it's been 14 days and I haven't heard anything about my order let alone gotten it.

Hey Cuppow - what's up??

TBeck, file a PayPal complaint. They'll stand behind you and make the company cough up your money or your goods. It works.

Hey I love these, and yes a mug jar would be perfect. I'm always spilling stuff, so this could definitely fit into my little world. Now, how about some kind of protection? Insulator, break absorber, advertising message from Googler... or other corporate monster. Let the corps pay for the protector... how's that for irony? Just sayin'... no harm no foul. © Hit me up at googler mail.

Good idea, SwamperTom. It does solve the problem, and may create a business opp. The mugs are cool. I'd carry one with a custom protector.

Hey Megan Marie. Just did a Google search "mason jar mugs." There the were. I won't carry glass around as a sippy cup. That's just asking for a disaster. Just my opinion.

I used to use a lovely old jar that had a mug handle on it, this would have been perfect. :) I will definitely buy it if I find another mug jar.

I like the idea ,however I have been using jars for travel drinks for a long time.I used a small round punch to make a hole in the metal lid and inserted a straw .I make cozy insulated protectors out of sweat shirt sleeves
