Weekend reads: The Nemo-snowpacalypseageddon calls for wine
As the East Coast hunkers down for a snowy weekend, many people’s minds turn to wine (and French toast).

Greetings from Southern New Jersey where it’s raining. I am definitely not complaining. A few hours up north the current storm Nemo is dropping snow, and quite frankly, I’ve become a huge grump in my old age when it comes to snow. I’ve got plans this weekend. Fun plans. And, I don’t need any snow messing them up.

My kids, on the other hand, have joined in the chorus of kids everywhere when they learned this storm was named Nemo by chanting, “Just keep snowing. Just keep snowing.”

They may get their wish because there could be a little snow overnight, and in addition to sledding, it means panic at the grocery store. I was there a few hours ago to buy a couple of things we needed, and it was mayhem. People are stocking up on the usual milk, bread, and eggs, and because it’s so common that people stock up on these things before a snowstorm, it's become known as a French toast storm.

But, people are also stocking up on wine, beer and liquor. That’s something I understand. I could handle being stuck in the house for a couple of days without the makings for French toast, but I definitely need a bottle or two of red to sip by the fire in the evening.

Wine is usually on my mind on a Friday night, but it’s even more so tonight with the snow and with Valentine’s Day coming up. So, here are a few wine related items for your weekend, whether you’re in snow or sunshine.
  • Blisstree is reporting that wine is about to get healthier. An Australian biochemist has added more antioxidants than is typical to red wine, hoping to make it a “powerful tonic against ailments such as arthritis, chronic fatigue and other inflammation-related conditions.”
  • Believe it or not, not all wines are vegan. Care2 explains why, and has 5 Scrumptious Vegan Wine suggestions for Valentine’s Day.
  • Here on MNN, we have a slide show of 7 lesser-known U.S. wine regions. There are plenty of wonderful wine making regions throughout the country, and I can almost guarantee you that the wineries in each of them have special Valentine’s weekend activities going on this weekend.
  • Finally, put February 23 on your calendar for Open That Bottle Night. It’s the designated night to pull out that bottle you’ve been saving for “some special occasion” and open it "just because."

Enjoy your weekend!
