Last summer I finally wrapped my head around the fact that not all rosé wines taste like the sweet White Zinfandels I drank in my early 20’s. I tried several sustainable rosés that I enjoyed. When the weather turned cold, I went back to drinking red.
Now that the heat is back with a vengeance (it was over 100 degrees here in South Jersey yesterday), rosé is back on my wine rack, too. DeLoach Vineyards sent me their 2010 Pinot Noir Rosé to sample, and I’ve enjoyed it for the past two nights with my meals. It’s a wonderful dry, fresh, fruity, lightly sweet, yet still spicy rosé that’s going to pair very nicely with plenty of summer dishes.
My first impression of this wine was that it had more heat and spice than I expected from a rosé, and for me, that’s a good thing. Even though I’ve accepted that there are many, many rosé wines that aren’t syrupy sweet, my palate is still braced for that over-sugared sensation when my eyes view the pink hue in my wine glass. When I taste something that ends up being very enjoyable, I’m pleasantly surprised.
The rosé was pleasant on its own, but it’s an extremely food-friendly wine, too. The first night I paired it with a simple Caprese Salad that had been made with slightly spicy marinated mozzarella and crusty bread, and it was a lovely complement. The next evening, I paired it with Spaghetti Carbonara, using some of the wine in the sauce. Again, a great pairing.
Dry rosés tend to pair well with mild and nutty cheeses, foods with a heavy onion flavor, salads with bitter greens, seafood, shellfish, and tomato based dishes, making this a perfect wine to go with summer’s bounty.
DeLoach’s 2010 Pinot Noir Rose is the first vineyard’s first estate vintage to be released from DeLoach’s harvest after earning organic certification from the California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF) in 2008 and receiving Biodynamic® certification from the prestigious Demeter USA, the only certification agent for biodynamic farms in the United States. The wine retails for about $20 a bottle.
