School cafeterias not inspected properly
photo: specialKRB/Flickr The Child Nutrition Act is up for renewal. It was up for renewal this year, but Congress pushed it off until next year. The quality of food should be the first order of business when the act is renewed. More fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and hormone free milk should be front and center. Congress needs to find some room to fit cafeteria inspections in there, too.

In most states the Dept of Ag. or Health does the inspections of restaurants and schools. Schools do not pay for this, nor do restaurants. Our inspector can't believe that schools require two inspections per year and restaurants only 1x/yr when Centers for Disease Control’s most recent Surveillance for Foodborne-Disease Outbreaks showed that only 4 percent of outbreaks were caused by food consumed at school, whereas food prepared at home caused 20 percent of the outbreaks and restaurant.... WASHINGTON—The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) will serve a sampling of traditional school lunch menu items to members of Congress next week to illustrate improvements its has made in the nutritional quality and taste of the $1.2 billion in school commodity foods and as well as win support to boost funding to continue reworking menus, reported the Washington Post.
