Green gardening with Arthur and friends

I never minded watching the PBS show Arthur when my kids were little. There are a lot of pointless shows for kids, even on PBS, but I thought Arthur was one that was worthwhile.

In celebration of Earth Day, PBS is airing five new episodes of Arthur this week all centered around the subject of going green.

If you’ve got little ones who are interested in gardening, two of this week’s episodes will be of particular interest to them.

In "War of the Worms" (April 21), Fern tries to fool the gang into believing that worms are attacking Elwood City. But they all soon discover the truth--that these squirming creatures are great for composting.

In "Home Sweet Home" (April 23), Buster's expertise in community gardening comes in handy when making new friends at summer camp.

The PBS website also has a few go green challenges that kids can participate in such as keeping a pitcher of cold water in the fridge instead of running the tap for the water to get cold – very simple things that even the littlest environmentalists can manage.
