Friday food news roundup

Food news from around the web for your weekend reading.

It’s Friday afternoon, and that means it’s time for me to give you a little weekend reading from around the web. Here are a few food related items that I thought might interest you.

People point to signs of the Apocalypse all the time. This may actually be one. Green Living Ideas reports that they’re putting a McDonalds in The Louvre. I wonder if The Mona Lisa’s smile had turned upside down.

First the pyramid entrance, now a McDonald’s fast food restaurant:  what would Louis XIV think of the modern day version of his Palais Louvre? Sure the Sun King was rather garish himself, but nothing can compete with the American icon of the golden arches for bad taste.  The French are known for their fine food and art, so what place does McDonald’s have at the Louvre, even if they call it McCafe?

Slate has an informative piece on what Angus beef is. Certified Angus Beef may sound impressive, but is it really?

The New York Times reported over the weekend that a woman became paralyzed after eating hamburgers tainted with E. coli. The burgers, labeled "American Chef's Selection Angus Beef Patties," included scraps from factories in Wisconsin, Nebraska, Texas, South Dakota, and Uruguay. What is Angus beef, anyway?

The New York Times is reporting that some of California’s food banks are going locavore and giving away fresh food that is too small, ripe or misshapen for the supermarkets.

ONCE A MONTH a tractor-trailer rolls up to the Family Early Learning Center, a one-room preschool in East San Jose, Calif., that doubles as a food pantry for poor families with young kids. On a bright Friday in August, a dozen or so women from the neighborhood gathered for the truck’s arrival. Volunteers as well as customers, they had come to help unload the monthly delivery of groceries from the local food bank.

Back in March, I told you that Michael Pollan was looking for people’s food rules. The New York Times has now published a slide show of the top 20 that Pollan picked from the thousands of rules he received. From “Don’t eat egg salad from a vending machine.” to “It’s better to pay the grocer than the doctor.” There’s some wisdom to be gained. Pollan will be publishing a book in January based on the food rules he received.

Enjoy your weekend!
