As the holidays draw closer, you'll notice more requests for donations of all kinds from charitable organizations. As we head into Thanksgiving, the big push will be for food donations. Donating cash to food banks is wonderful because they're often able to buy more with a dollar than you are. Still, some charities — including my church — ask for donations of specific foods during this time of year.

My church puts together Thanksgiving baskets filled with foods like boxed mashed potatoes, canned vegetables and boxed stuffing. Other charities ask for traditional Thanksgiving foods plus staples like peanut butter, canned meats, canned soups and hot and cold cereals.

So this month, I'm doing my coupon roundup a little differently. For each site, I'm going to list the coupons for the natural and organic products like I usually do. After those coupons, I'm going to list coupons for products that food banks appreciate like canned fruits and vegetables, peanut butter and cereal, even if they aren't all natural or organic.

It's true that the best foods for everyone are the ones that are whole and created with as few chemicals and artificial ingredients as possible. But when the food is flying off the charitable pantry's shelves faster than the group can replace it, donating two jars of regular peanut butter is a better choice than one jar of organic peanut butter. And, if you spend a little time matching up the coupons with the sales in the store circular before you head out to shop, you'll usually be able to great deals on the foods you're going to donate — perhaps good enough deals to allow you to buy a little extra.
