Ben & Jerry's 'Schweddy Balls' ice cream is no joke

The ice cream company names its newest flavor after Alec Baldwin's classic 'Saturday Night Live' character Pete Schweddy. Yes, they're really going there.

Thu, Sep 08 2011 at 9:54 AM EST

I rarely watch “Saturday Night Live” anymore, but I love to watch the yearly holiday special that features classic skits from throughout the years. One skit that never fails to crack up everyone in my family is the famous “Schweddy Balls” sketch.

In a piece that pokes fun of the tone of an NPR program, Alec Baldwin plays Pete Schweddy, the head of a company called “Season’s Eatings.” They make balls — popcorn balls, rum balls, cheese balls and other types of balls so delicious that Pete declares, “No one can resist my Schweddy balls.”

Yes, it’s crude, but it’s impossible not to laugh like a 12-year-old boy when watching it.

Ben & Jerry’s has now turned this classic sketch into a frozen treat that contains vanilla ice cream, a hint of rum, fudge-covered rum balls and milk chocolate malt balls. I’m not joking. Schweddy Balls is the latest ice cream flavor from the company that has committed to sourcing all possible ingredients in fair trade form by 2013.

In a press release, Alec Baldwin said, “For a long time, I thought that ‘Here Lies Pete Schweddy' would end up on my tombstone. Now, thanks to Ben & Jerry's, the goodness of the Schweddy family recipe won't go with me to the great beyond. It is immortalized here, right now, and it's an ice cream. Ben & Jerry's and Schweddy. Two great names in American dessert, together at last.”

I need to find a way to turn this ice cream into something I can put on the dessert tray at my annual neighborhood holiday party.

If you’ve never seen the “Schweddy Balls” sketch (or you have, but you just need a good giggle), take look.

Fun piece and I thoroughly enjoy MNN, however, his name is "Alec Baldwin" not "Alex"
