Last year, I finally did it. I finally canned something. For years, I’d been hesitant, irrationally hesitant, to give a try. I made five jars of peach jam, and every time I took another jar from the basement storage throughout the winter, I had a great feeling of accomplishment.

This Saturday, August 16, Ball® is hoping to inspire people all over the world to have that great feeling with International Can-It-Forward Day with a variety of ways to join in the preserving fun.

  • Can-It-Forward Day TV – Broadcast live from Brooklyn Borough Hall in Brooklyn, NY, Bravo’s Top Chef judge and chef Hugh Acheson will host the event. There will be several canning demos and viewer questions answered in real-time by Acheson and other experts. One of the experts will be my canning inspiration and friend Marisa McLellan of Food In Jars. At 11 AM ET, she’ll be demonstrating how to make Peach Sriracha Jam.
  • Home canning parties – Trying a new culinary challenge with a friend or several friends often takes the fear out of it. Ball has plenty of resources to help you plan a home canning party including recipes, an intro-to-canning guide, and printable canning labels.
In conjunction with Can-It-Forward Day, I’m partnering with Ball® to give one random reader a box full preserving tools, including the Frozen Herb Starters I wrote about last week. I’ll have details on the give away first thing tomorrow.
