While sipping soup from a mug is nothing new, the way that soup gets in the mug is about to change. Campbell Soup Co. will launch K-Cup soup next year. When the soup company’s chief executive Denise Morrison came up with the thought that a Keurig could be used to make “fresh-brewed soup,” she was in a position to make it happen.
Here’s how it will work. There will be a small packet that will contain dry ingredients, like noodles and vegetables. The K-Cup will contain broth powder. Pour the packet into a cup, put a mug or cup under the Keurig, put the K-Cup in the Keurig that has water in it, turn it on, and brewed broth pours into the cup. Stir and sip.
When K-Cups first came on the market, they were a coffee-only product. Tea quickly followed. Now Keurig users can brew hot coffee, iced coffee, hot tea, iced tea, hot chocolate, cider, and even lemonade in their machines. The Campbell’s soup K-Cup looks to me to be the first non-beverage product made specifically for this type of machine.
Campbell’s says when its soup K-Cups are available, there will be three varieties. The only variety that’s decided on at the moment is, not surprisingly, noodle soup in chicken broth.
Aside from the fact that Campbell’s is partnering with Green Mountain to create the K-Cup portion of the product, there isn’t anything particularly “green” about it. Single-use K-Cups are seen as an environmental waste problem. K-Cups are made from a variety of materials, not just plastic, that make them difficult to recycle. While reusable coffee filters for Keurig machines have been on the market for a while now, they won’t be usable for the soup.
Earlier this year, Campbell’s was named one of the world’s most sustainable companies. Green Mountain also is committed to being sustainable. Now that the two companies are partnering for this product, it would be great if they combined their resources to not just be innovative with what goes in the K-Cup, but also innovative with its packaging by finally creating an easily recyclable K-Cup.
