GMO labeling: Now with more star power
Just Label It releases another video of 27 celebrities demanding the right to know if GMOs are in their food. They had us at Michael J. Fox.

I can’t resist clicking on an article about Michael J. Fox or a video that contains him. I am of that generation that dreamt of being a member of the Keaton family and traveled “Back to the Future” with Fox all three times on the big screen when the movies were first released.

When Just Label It sent me their latest star-studded video of celebrities demanding that they have a right to know if GMOs, genetically modified organisms, are in their food and let me know that Fox was in it, I had to click.

There’s no new information in this video, but there’s something about seeing Fox open it up with saying, “I have the right to know what’s in my food and you do to” that’s compelling. It’s well known that Fox has Parkinson’s disease. He was diagnosed with it in 1991, before GMOs were introduced heavily into our food system, so you can’t correlate his disease with genetically modified organisms in food.

Yet, it makes you think. The root cause of Parkinson’s is unknown. What unknowns the addition of GMOs into our food introducing into our bodies, into our children’s bodies, that may cause health problems in the future? Maybe GMOs are causing problems now, but those problems haven’t been traced back to the altered foods yet.

I’m not sure where this originated, but I’ve seen this simple argument for labeling GMOs repeated by Robyn O’Brien and others. “No evidence of harm” is not the same as “evidence of no harm.” We simply don’t know yet. And so, yes, we have the right to know if GMOs are in our food.

As a PR practitioner I understand the value of celebrity endorsement, but take into account the fact that, as you just said, there is no evidence of harm. People are influenced by what they see on TV and do not research enough to find out what is of big concern to them. There are however, more advantages to the GM crops than disadvantages, such as providing food for millions of people, amongst others. I would love to hear your opinion on the moral or profit-driven value of the food labeling system,
