I’m always surprised at how much people spend decorating for Halloween. Even before I started paying attention to how sustainable my holidays were, I marveled at the waste that happened because of Halloween. This infographic compiled by usagain has some numbers that are pretty surprising.

$8 billion is spent on Halloween each year. But that’s not the number that surprised me the most. A little more than 15 percent of us buy costumes for our pets! Why?
The infographic has some good ideas for curbing the waste from Halloween. Make costumes from things you have around the house or swap costumes with someone else. Another tip: if you’re one of the 51 percent who decorate your yard, don’t buy anything new this year to add to your current decorations. Really. We don’t need any more plastic blow-up ghosts on people’s front lawns.

15% dress their pets in costumes? I never have and have oft thought it silly. But now, we have this puppy who we seem to be spending a ridiculous amount of money on and I keep seeing costumes and considering them.
